Why do states offer a discount on a marriage license if we attend a premarital preparation course?

Many states, including Tennessee, offer a discount for the marriage license to couples who attend a 4 hour premarital class. States recognize that divorce is expensive and destructive for families whether children are involved or not. In 2018 TN had nearly 24,000 divorces! Much of this could be avoided if couple will make the investment at the beginning and learn how to be intentional about protecting their marriage. We're glad you have chosen to look into our premarital class.

Will this meet the requirement for a discount on the marriage license in TN?
This course meets the requirements as outlined below from Tennessee Code Annotated §36-6-413(b)(5):

"(5)(A) A man and a woman who, together or separately, complete a premarital preparation course in compliance with this section shall be exempt from the sixty dollar ($60.00) fee otherwise imposed by this section.  Such course shall be not less than four (4) hours each, and shall be completed no more than one (1) year prior to the date of application for a marriage license.  Each individual shall verify completion of the course by filing with the application a valid certificate of completion from the course provider, on a form developed by the administrative office of the courts, which certificate shall comply with the requirements of this subdivision (b)(5)."

TN has a specific form that needs to be completed after your course. The form required must be notarized and our staff will make arrangements to get your forms to you the following week.

When is the course offered?
Upcoming premarital class times are listed below. The class is 2 hours on two Saturday's for a total of 4 hours. The full four (4) hours is required to meet the requirements for the discount on the license.
Future classes will be listed once the schedule is determined.
